The splashing kids and/or birds represent the cities devotion to families and/or aviaries. And fountains are usually good for a little peepee humor which represents a city's love of peepee humor.

About ten years ago, people started moving fountains indoors, so they could say the same thing about someone's household that they say about their city. It led to indoor rock gardens, herb gardens, and a resurgence in cultivating bonsai. Why? I think it might have been that these natural elements which have always represented the splendor of the natural world were just located too darn far away from the TV.

It was this trend that brought about the Sound-Activated Hippo Fountain (Pictured in the upper left corner). Why enjoy a plain, drab fountain indoors when you can enjoy one with a hippo family perched on it?

Now you can enjoy the soothing sound of running water… with hippos! Minus the soothing sound of running water. Because the Sound-Activated Hippo Fountain only runs for about 10 seconds at a time. “That's enough comforting sounds of nature for you,” it seems to say. “Stop watching those insipid Frasier reruns for a while and maybe I'll give you another squirt.”

Actually, that's not true. It's pretty much the opposite of that. The louder the TV, the more the fountain works, because it is, and this may come as a shock, sound-activated. It runs on a clapper.

Due to the inevitable crossing of 80s As Seen on TV and 90s Bring Nature Indoors, every time a car alarm goes off, Mama Hippo empties her stomach contents into a nearby pool, where it mingles with the sparkling water there before being sucked into a tube right back into her belly. It's heart-wrenching, really.

Again, I have to wonder about the manufacturer's intent. It's ostensibly a fountain, with a hippo shooting water from its mouth into a pond. For ten seconds. Then nothing. That really is more of a hippo vomit simulator, correct? I can't think of any other fountains that only go for ten seconds, probably because they don't want to invite the barfing comparison.

The poor baby hippo is made to watch as his mother succumbs to hippo hangover. His eyes say, “Oh, mother, I wish I could hold back your hair,” but his voice says nothing, because, you know, the puke is sound-activated.

I think the Sound-Activated Hippo Fountain would be great in a marriage counselor's office. Have the couple sit down and try to talk things through. When tensions rise, and the yelling begins, they're interrupted by the sound of Mama Hippo revisiting breakfast. The tension breaks immediately, everyone has a good laugh, take a break to pee, and talk like civilized people. Of course, ithe Sound-Activated Hippo Fountain is heavy, and a projectile vomiting stone hippo could be a dangerous projectile. So scratch that idea.
